Other Graduate Credits
Credit for Professional Military Education Courses (PME)
Troy University awards transfer credit for certain Professional Military Education (PME) courses completed at certain military service schools for which credit is recommended by the American Council on Education. The number of hours granted for each program is limited to 9 SH, but not more than 6 SH may be allowed for non-resident seminar courses supported by written certification from the instructing school/organization of the seminar format. No credit may be granted for work that will be over eight years old at the time of graduation from the Troy State University program for which transfer credit was requested. No waivers will be permitted. The student's date of admission to Troy University determines which PME matrix to use in evaluating military service school courses.
For example:
- Students enrolled at Troy prior to October 1, 1989 will be evaluated using the 1985 Matrix.
- Students enrolled between October 1, 1989 and October 1, 1993 may use either the 1989 or 1993 Matrix.
- Students enrolled after October 1, 1993 will use the 1993 Matrix.
All students will submit a Petition for Graduate School Credit by Transfer/Program Change form after completion of 6 SH with Troy.
Lists of approved PME courses with applicable constraints are available for reference at any Troy office.
Transient Credit
Students who have been granted unconditional admission to the Graduate School and are in good standing may take up to 12 SH (6 SH for the CP program) of approved graduate level courses at another regionally accredited graduate school. A grade of "B" or higher must be earned in each course taken in transient status. The combined total of transfer and transient credits from schools outside the Troy system may not exceed 12 SH for the MSM, MPA, MSIR, HRM, MSFE, and MSCJ programs, and 6 SH for the MSCP program. Transient credit taken outside the Troy System does not count toward Troy residence credit or Troy GPA.
Approval to enroll in such courses must be obtained at any appropriate department at main site prior to enrollment in the course. Approval forms may be obtained from the Troy office. Military senior service schools credits, if appropriate for the degree, may be accepted as transient credit based on Troy evaluation of American Council on Education recommendation.
Credit for Undergraduate Courses
Graduate students may not register for undergraduate courses to be taken for graduate credit. Graduate students may register only for 5000 and 6000 numbered courses for degree credit at the master's level.
Correspondence Courses
Credit earned through correspondence courses/programs is not acceptable as graduate transfer credit.
Shifting of Credit Between Graduate Programs Within the TROY System
Students may shift credit from their current graduate program to a future graduate program since it is not possible for them to be concurrently enrolled in two graduate programs. They must request, in writing, that the course(s) not be applied toward their current program but to another TROY graduate program at some future date, normally not to exceed two semesters. The course(s) to be shifted will not be used in the computation of the GPA for the current degree program and will not be included on the student's Admission to Candidacy form, or on the graduation checklist for the current program. When a student enrolls in the other graduate program, the shifted course(s) will be posted to the new program.
NOTE: Students using VA benefits should be aware that the VA will not pay for courses taken in a second program until course work for the first program is completed. (See the VA certifying official for further details).
Second Master's Degree Credit
No more than 6 SH of credit earned on one master's degree may be applied to the requirements for a second master's degree and is subject to departmental approval. Standard procedures and policies for petitioning for transfer credit apply.
Policy Statement: Troy University is an equal opportunity institution and therefore does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, or handicap in admission or access to its programs.
