13.  What is “Full Text Journal Search”?
If you already know the citation (journal title, date, article title, pages) for an article that you need, use the Full Text Journal Search link on the left hand side of the TROY Library site to find which databases might have the full text of the article that you need.  See question 14.

14. Is Journal XYZ full text in any of the databases?
To determine this, use. Serial Solutions by clicking on the link for words Full Text Journal Search on the left side of the page. Enter the name of the journal and select “Titles equals.” Click Search, and it will bring up a screen that tells you if that journal is available online in full text, and if so, in what database and for which dates.. Be sure to note if the date of the article you need is included. (Some publications hold back the online versions for 6 months to a year.) If your journal is full text in another database, you can switch to that database through the pull down database menus (not by the often false links in the Full Text Journal Search database, alas), enter the title of the journal and the title of the article, and to gain access to that article.

15. How can I find a peer-reviewed (scholarly, research) article?
Each database, on the keyword, expert, or advanced search page, has a box marked Peer Reviewed or Scholarly. Click on that, and your search will be limited to articles from peer reviewed, or scholarly, journals.  Some databases also have tabs or other feature which will narrow your search results to content from scholarly or peer reviewed journals. “Peer reviewed” means that after the article was written, it was submitted for review to other scholars in that field. Their approval was necessary for the article to have been printed in that journal.

16. I’ve checked all the databases for the journal I need and none has it in full text. How do I get the article I need?
If you can’t find the full text of an article, contact the librarian at swcornett@troy.edu or, in the continental United States , 757-865-7880 or toll free 888-241-0277, and she will be glad to work with you to locate a specific journal.

17. How can I find out if any other libraries have the article/book/video that I need?

You can check at  http://worldcat.org/ where you put in the title of the item that you need and, once you’ve put in your zip code, WorldCat will tell you which local library has it. For many libraries, WorldCat will link you to their online catalog so that you can determine if the item is available and other information.

Depending on when you need the item, the AR librarian can often locate it in the local area.  If you don’t have time to wait, often you can arrange to visit the library and check it out yourself.   Interlibrary Loans are available free of charge for needed materials, but it often takes a week or more for them to be shipped from the lending library.

C-ontact the librarian at swcornett@troy.edu or, in the continental United -States, 757-865-7880 or toll free 888-241-0277 or fax757-865-3295 with the citation for the required materials, contact information for yourself and the date that you need to have them.

18.  How do I cite sources/ format a research paper/prepare an annotated bibliography?

Troy University provides help through the Writing Center http://troy.troy.edu/writingcenter/

Read the Style Manual PDF for suggestions of helpful online sources.  Note that although this can assist you with APA, MLA, and Turabian styles, these guides are not meant to replace the published manuals for these citation styles. These guides are designed to  help you interpret those manuals.

19. Do you carry textbooks in the Library? If I order one from the bookstore, it’ll take too long to get here.
No, the Library doesn’t carry textbooks. Although occasionally we will have older editions of textbooks that students have donated to the library collection.

20.  What other libraries are in my area?
Go to the Library Guide for your area, DC or Norfolk. You’ll find listings for academic, government and public libraries in your area.

21.  How do I get a consortium card of the local academic libraries has an item that I need right away won’t check it out to me unless I have a consortium card.
Many academic libraries offer circulation to the general public with proof of local address, but Troy University isn’t part of the local academic consortium, The Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education. We do offer to reimburse you for Friends of the Library memberships that are available at several local libraries. This will allow you to have special circulation privileges since the Friends support the upkeep of the library. If you decide to use this option, save your original receipt and take it to wherever you register for classes. You can be reimbursed for up to $50 per year for 1 Friend of the Library membership.

  22. I found a book/journal/video at the TROY site library.  How do I go about accessing it?
Contact the AR Librarian and she will either locate the same item in the local area so that you can have it sooner or will arrange to borrow the item from main site.
